Environmental Health Specialist / Registered Environmental Health Specialist

Union County Health Department

Full-Time, Classified, Hourly, Non-Exempt.  37.50 hours per week, Monday – Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends.  The pay range for this position is: EHSIT $18.41 - $26.81 per hour, based on experience; REHS $18.41 – $30.77 per hour, based on experience

Plan, organize, and conduct inspections in the Food program; perform operation permit inspections of food service operations, food establishments, vending, etc.; and enforce compliance with applicable state and local environmental health standards.  Perform permit/required inspections at pools, tattoo/body art operations, schools, and manufactured home parks.  Perform rabies, rodent, and other vector control investigations; West Nile and other illness investigations; and inspections of refuse hauling and sewage hauling vehicles.  Collect water and effluent samples.  Cross-train in other Environmental Health programs (e.g., Water, Sewage, Operation & Maintenance, etc.).  Conduct investigations of safety hazards. Perform routine environmental health testing to determine non-compliance with unsanitary abatement standards.  Document findings in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.  Follow up on violations to ensure compliance.  Apply the agency’s standardized methodology to enforce state and local laws and regulations for abatement of unsanitary conditions.  Maintain a professional relationship with clients, operators, contractors, and other officials.  Serve as the subject matter expert in radon.  Answer questions and provide education on testing, exposure, and health risks/effects related to radon exposure.  Perform radon testing, maintain equipment, complete and submit reports. Prepare, update, and maintain documents and accurate records.  Participate in policy development.

Must be detail oriented, organized, possess strong oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills, and strong customer service skills.  A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health or a related health field, licensed in Ohio as an Environmental Health Specialist in Training or a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, and the ability to maintain licensure required.  Must possess or be willing to obtain Ohio Radon Tester license; and must be able to maintain license.  A valid Ohio Driver’s License, valid auto liability insurance, the ability to maintain auto liability insurance, and the ability to maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance policy essential.  Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted and up to 50 pounds with assistance necessary.  At least one (1) year of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist; and certification in food service operator, and/or pools preferred.
