POSITION DESCRIPTION: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST- IN-TRAINING

RESPONSIBLE TO: Environmental Health Supervisor

Rate of Pay:

Starting hourly rate for an REHS is $23.56/hour up to $26.53/hour based on experience

Hours per Week:

37 and ½ hours per week.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of a registered environmental health specialist, performs environmental health inspections and investigations of various facilities (e.g. food service operations, food establishments, vending locations, camps, swimming pools, spas, home and commercial sewage systems, private water systems program, school inspections, solid waste programs, home environmental lead risk assessments and inspections, rabies, and complaint inspections relating to these programs) to ensure compliance with state and local laws, rules, and regulations. Initiates and recommends enforcement actions and follow-up activities for the above-mentioned programs.                        

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Under the direct supervision of a registered environmental health specialist, conducts inspections and investigations of various facilities as assigned to ensure compliance with state and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  1. Initiates and recommends enforcement actions and follow-up procedures for the above-mentioned activities. Monitors progress of recommendations.
  1. Writes and maintains detailed reports of environmental health and sanitation inspections; conducts correspondence regarding environmental health matters.
  1. Participates in community awareness and outreach activities.
  1. Serve on relevant local community and interagency committees. E.g., participates with management and staff for Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Strategic Planning, and Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) committees.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. S. degree in environmental health or related field, (e.g. biology, chemistry, microbiology, etc). Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training license or R.E.H.S.I.T. eligible. Valid driver’s license. Must maintain liability insurance on personal vehicle for carrying out job duties.
