Epidemiologist

Position:  Epidemiologist                                                                    

Position to be filled: April 8, 2024

Salary:  $56,127.00 annually

Reports to: Epidemiology Supervisor

Hours:  Mon. – Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.    

Vaccine Policy: Effective November 1, 2021 all new hires will need to meet COVID and Influenza vaccine requirements or request an exemption as outlined in the CCBH Vaccination Policy.

Minimum Requirements: 

• Bachelor's degree in either biological sciences, environmental health, nursing, public health, or related field. Curriculum must include at least one course in epidemiology and one course in biostatistics. OR Master’s degree in public health OR Professional degree or certification in a non-epidemiology health field (e.g., RN, RS, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD).  Curriculum must include at least one course in epidemiology and one course in biostatistics.
• Minimum of four years of experience as a CDI or equivalent (with Bachelor’s degree) OR minimum of two years’ experience as a CDI or equivalent (with Master’s degree). Experience must be obtained under the supervision of an epidemiologist.
• Valid driver's license and insurance at time of appointment.
• Knowledge of the fundamental principles of epidemiology and public health.
• Knowledge of program processes and methods for prevention, intervention, and control of diseases of public health importance.
• Basic knowledge of local, state, and federal guidelines related to infectious disease transmission, prevention, and epidemiology principles.
• Ability to carry out data collection, analysis, and reporting in support of surveillance and epidemiologic investigations.
• Ability to efficiently multi-task daily.
• Good customer service, verbal and written communication skills, and effective presentation skills. Good interpersonal relationship skills including cultural sensitivity & competence.
• Ability to respond to public health planning or response events and emergencies during non-business hours.
• Ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including public health professionals and community partners, such as public officials, community leaders, healthcare professionals, public safety partners, the public and the media.
• Proficiency with use of PC hardware & basic software (i.e., Microsoft office), email, and office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, scanner, telephone, etc.).
• Proficiency with statistical software packages (i.e., SAS, SPSS, R, STATA, etc.).
• Ability to preserve confidentiality of agency records.
• Proficiency with use of agency databases for data querying and reporting.
• Mathematical aptitude necessary to assist in developing budgets and monitoring expenditures.

Responsibilities:

• Proposes and designs investigations & studies using both laboratory research and epidemiologic methods to determine cause, nature, and consequences of reported diseases.
• Identifies population groups for study and evaluation of risk from various health and wellness dangers.
• Partners with Communicable Disease Investigators (CDI), data analysts, interns, and other temporarily assigned staff to coordinate and conduct outbreak and other epidemiologic investigations, including reportable infectious diseases, chronic diseases, and injuries.
• Receives, enters, and reviews case information within the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS), National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS), Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System and other applicable surveillance systems.
• Participates in the design, management, and use of surveillance systems for diseases of public health importance.
• Conducts literature reviews and analyzes the results of surveillance data. Prepares reports to be presented to other scientific research facilities and to legislators.
• Monitors various disease surveillance systems (i.e., EpiCenter anomalies, OCISS, ODRS, etc.) for significant disease trends and early detection of emerging infectious diseases in sensitive areas (food handling, childcare, and adult care) and chronic disease. Identifies gaps in reporting.
• Reports findings via meetings and presentations to a variety of audiences. Educates and advises stakeholders and the public on findings.
• Plans, administers, and evaluates health safety standards and programs to improve public health, conferring with health department, industry personnel, physicians, and others.
• Develops proposals for future research projects and creates requests for project funding.
• Provides scientific technical advice and guidance to various health related organizations related to data collection methodology & other epidemiologic issues.
• Develops and extracts reports from databases (i.e., Enterprise, etc.) for delivery to internal and external customers. Gathers and organizes documents to satisfy public records requests or other reporting obligations.
• Participates public health emergency activities as needed. Serves as a 24/7 first responding member of emergency response teams.
• Collaborates with internal and external partners on special projects as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
