Environmental Health Intern

Union County Health Department

 

Unpaid internship. 15.00 – 37.50 hours per week, scheduled Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:15pm, from May to August 2018.

Assist in environmental health assessments, sampling techniques, procedures, and investigation processes. Contact homeowners, operators, and/or officials to schedule appointments. Assess sites to ensure compliance with regulations and document findings. Collect water and effluent samples, perform operation permit assessments, and perform routine testing to determine compliance. Conduct investigations of reported safety hazards. Assist in rabies control investigations; investigations of food borne, West Nile, or other illnesses; health nuisance investigations and abatement; and rodent and other vector control and inspections. Prepare, document, and update/maintain accurate records, participate in policy development, and maintain a professional relationship with clients, contractors, and other governmental officials/staff.

Must be detail oriented, organized, possess strong oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills, and strong customer service skills. A valid Ohio Driver’s License, valid auto liability insurance, the ability to maintain auto liability insurance, and the ability to maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance policy are essential. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, move, or push objects, packages, boxes, or files weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted and up to 50 pounds with assistance. A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of entry level college course work in the field of environmental health or public health preferred.
