Environmental Health Specialist

Union County Health Department

Full-Time, Classified, Hourly, Non-Exempt.  37.50 hours per week, Monday – Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends.  The pay range for this position is $19.78 - $26.26 per hour, based on experience.

Plan, organize, and conduct inspections in the Sewage, Water, and Food programs.  Inspect household sewage treatment systems (STS) and private water systems (PWS); perform operation permit inspections of food service operations, food establishments, etc.; and enforce compliance with applicable state and local environmental health standards.  Perform routine testing, document findings, and follow up on violations.  Apply the agency’s standardized methodology to enforce state and local laws and regulations.  Enforce compliance with applicable state and local environmental health standards.  Contact operators, licensees, or officials to schedule appointments.  Maintain a professional relationship with clients, contractors, and other officials.  Plan, organize, and conduct educational opportunities for employees, residents, and licensed installers/service providers.  Cross-train in other Environmental Health programs (e.g., food service operations, food establishments, vending, mobile home parks, campgrounds, swimming pools, spas, schools, radon, nuisance, etc.).  Perform routine environmental health testing to determine non-compliance with unsanitary abatement standards.  Document findings in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.  Follow up on violations to ensure compliance.  Apply the agency’s standardized methodology to enforce state and local laws and regulations for abatement of unsanitary conditions.  Maintain a professional relationship with clients, operators, contractors, and other officials.  Prepare, update, and maintain documents and accurate records.  Participate in policy development.

Must be detail oriented, organized, possess strong oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills, and strong customer service skills.  A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health or a related health field; eligibility for Ohio Environmental Health Specialist in Training licensure and obtain licensure within one (1) month of hire; and ability to maintain licensure required.  Must possess or be willing to obtain Ohio Radon Tester license; and must be able to maintain license.  A valid Ohio Driver’s License, valid auto liability insurance, the ability to maintain auto liability insurance, and the ability to maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance policy essential.  Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted and up to 50 pounds with assistance necessary.  Current licensure as an Environmental Health Specialist in Training or a Registered Environmental Health Specialist; and current certification in water, wastewater, soils, vector control, food service manager, pools, and/or radon preferred.
