Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Health Commissioner, provides direct supervision to the health educators and coalition coordinators. The Health Education Supervisor will lead and manage health education programs aimed at promoting health literacy and improving community health outcomes. This role involves overseeing program development, implementation, and evaluation while providing guidance and support to health educators and staff. This position will also assist with accreditation efforts, including working with community stakeholders to implement and maintain the Community Health Assessment (CHA), Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) and the strategic plan.
Essential Knowledge, Abilities and Skills, Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in public health, nursing, natural sciences, statistics, policy or related field preferred
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) preferred
- A minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience in public health or a related field preferred.

- Proficiency in PC operation and use of email, internet browsers, spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software and other web-based collaboration tools
- Proficiency with computer hardware and software troubleshooting
- Accurately interpret and apply rules, regulations and standards
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks
- Develop, implement and monitor programs and services

Essential Functions of the Position
- Participates in long-range planning for development including:
- Problem analysis and resolution
- Service and program analysis
- Participates in presentations to Board members, staff and external audiences to report on performance management, QI, and accreditation activities
- Participates in department wide budget preparation including
- Forecasting future budgetary needs
- Analyzing and recommending resource allocations
- Attends management team meetings
- Responsible for directing and leading Health Educator(s)
- Interviews candidates for positions and recommends hiring
- Ensures division employees receive orientation, in-service and development training
- Monitors the work of employees and ensures compliance with policies and procedures
- Assigns work
- Ensures work is completed in a timely manner
- Reviews employee timesheets and authorizes overtime and leave requests
- Evaluates employee performance and maintains proper records
- Administers discipline if necessary
- Provides leadership and guidance to staff in fulfilling their responsibilities
- Participates in community activities as a representative of the agency
- Develops and implements cooperative events and programs with community groups
- Coordinates community participation in program planning as assigned
- Represents the agency as a public speaker as assigned
- Performs duties of subordinates as necessary
- Serves on temporary or permanent committees as assigned
- Attends meetings as required
- Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions
- Performs additional duties and assignments as requested
- Responds to a public health emergency
Job Location
- The Supervisor of Health Education and Community Engagement may be required to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays or on-call and will travel within and outside the county.
- Additional work hours may be required based on program demands and requirements
- Travel within and outside the District required
- Occasional work at night or on weekends.
Equipment Used
- General office equipment;
- Any other necessary equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to load and unload vehicle with health education materials when needed;
- Light office work.
Other Responsibilities
- Respond to public health emergencies as appropriate and/or directed by the Health Commissioner;
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement of individual, program, and organizational performance;
- Performs any and all other related duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, and ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Ottawa County Health Department;
- Contributes to the development and implementation of the organizational strategic plan.
