Mission Statement    

 

The mission of the Association of Ohio Health Commissioners is to lead Ohio’s public health community by collaborating with its stakeholders to provide administrative and legislative leadership in health promotion, disease and injury prevention, protection of the environment and by providing public health professionals with a forum for dialogue and continuing education.

Strategic Priorities

 

PUBLIC POLICY ADVOCACY

 

·        The AOHC speaks with a united voice to advocate for public health legislation and legislative change, in Ohio and in collaboration with other states.  By gaining strength at the grassroots level, and speaking from a common set of priorities, the AOHC will affect change in legislation, which will in turn strengthen and build the capacity of local health districts.

o      The AOHC Board and members are educated and aware of current trends in public health and public health legislation.

o       The AOHC has a current legislative platform, developed through a structured and inclusive process with members.

o       The AOHC Board and members develop and maintain strong relationships with members of the Ohio General Assembly.

o       The AOHC Board and committees are organized and structured to

§         proactively respond to opportunities and/or threats in the public health environment.

§         effectively engage members in dialogue and action toward legislative change.

o       The AOHC continually fosters the relationship with the Ohio Department of Health, Ohio EPA, and other state agencies, to advocate on behalf of members.

o       The AOHC partners and collaborates with other health associations and with the Ohio Department of Health.

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

·        The AOHC supports members through education, training, professional development, and mentoring.

   o      The AOHC provides opportunities for conferences and trainings.

   o       The AOHC organizes forums to increase opportunities for interactive learning.

   o       The AOHC nurtures the diverse public health workforce.

 

AOHC INFRASTRUCTURE & DEVELOPMENT

·        The AOHC internal organization is structured to be responsive and proactive to emerging public health issues.

o       The AOHC Board directs planning and policy, rather than operational issues.

o       The AOHC Board and the Executive Director position the organization to have the optimum impact it seeks to achieve.

o       The AOHC strategic plan is implemented to allow time to accomplish the impacts.  The AOHC works with local health commissioners/other public health professionals to determine core impacts, and how to divest of priorities/programs that are out-of-date or ineffective. 

·        The AOHC develops and implements a clear and effective communication with members, legislators, advocates and other public supporters.

o       The AOHC continually updates its website to include information on its legislative platform, information for members, etc.

 

FINANCIAL STABILITY 

·        The AOHC is fiscally sound, with adequate resources to accomplish the priorities of the association

o       The AOHC develops and implements an accurate and sound financial plan, which includes a mechanism/system for financial planning and effective allocation of funds.

o       The AOHC continues to raise funds to support the priorities and activities identified by the Board.
