Job Title: Registered Sanitarian/Sanitarian in Training
Responsible to: Environmental Health Director
Positions Supervised: None
Work Hours/Salary: Full Time (40 hours/week), with benefits, Non-exempt, hourly
Essential Functions: Conducts routine and complex inspections, testing, sampling, and vector control duties in state mandated programs. Initiates and recommends enforcement actions and follow-up procedures for the above-mentioned activities. Must have ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form and be capable of preparing meaningful, concise and accurate reports. Participates in community awareness and outreach activities. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work with the public utilizing good customer service skills at all times
- Ability to work in an open office environment
- Ability to set a daily schedule that meets department goals for productivity
- Ability to drive to and from out of office job sites each day.
- Must be highly detail oriented, organized and dependable with proficiency in computer, communication, and multi-tasking skills
- Knowledge of biology and environmental health required
- If Sanitarian-In-Training, must successfully pass the Registered Sanitarian exam within Ohio Department of Health time frames
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have a BS degree in environmental health or related field
- Must be a Registered Sanitarian with the Ohio Sanitarian Registration Board, OR a
- Sanitarian-in-Training meeting the educational requirements set forth by the Ohio Sanitarian Registration Act (ORC 4736)
Qualifications Preferred:
- Environmental health or public health experience is a plus
- Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English or Chinese/English) are encouraged to apply
Overall Job Responsibilities:
- To ensure agency mission/vision and programmatic success, performs environmental health & sanitation inspections on various premises, facilities and environmental health systems
- Ensures and enforces compliance with state and local public health laws and regulations
- Writes detailed reports on environmental health and sanitation activities
- Utilizes best practices to implement effective programming activities
- Participates in emergency preparedness trainings and activities.
- Interacts with confidential databases to enter, store and retrieve public health related data as needed to monitor mandated programs
- Utilizes good customer service skills in working with individuals in the community to ensure compliance with rules and law
- Participates in meetings and trainings as required, in-house, online, and in other Ohio cities
- Prepares and conducts professional presentations and trainings to the public as needed
- Is knowledgeable about evidence-based best practices in environmental public health
- Participates in program evaluation, outcomes measurement, and data collection
Other:
- Serves a probationary period of 120 days
- Position may be subject to background check
- Serves in an on-call capacity 24-7 in the event of a public health emergency except while on approved leave that prohibits availability
- Occasional evening and weekend work required
- May be required to play an active role in the event of a public health emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours
- Valid Ohio Driver’s license in good standing and insurable under Butler County Board of Health’s Policy
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Successful completion of basic FEMA classes within allotted time frame
- Other duties as assigned
