Epidemiologist

Carroll County Health Department

Reports To: Health Commissioner  Position Status: Part-time Contract   Pay Range: $17.00 (hourly) / $10,068 (annually) 

Scope: This position will perform a wide variety of epidemiology services for Carroll County. This position will evolve to include chronic disease data gathering and analysis for community health assessment and health improvement priority setting.

Essential Duties (including, but not limited to): * Investigates epidemics, epidemic outbreaks, suspected or confirmed bioterrorism incidents, and/or other public health, utilizes appropriate statistical analysis and methods using statistical computer software packages (e.g. SAS, Epi Info, SPSS), evaluates risks and notifies authorities of necessary actions. * Trains reporters such as health department staff, Infection Control Practitioners (ICP), labs, hospital emergency room staff and physician offices on using Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS) to meet reporting requirements in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code (ORC); provide assistance in registration and training on ODRS as needed. * Develops and maintains a database of 24/7 contacts for all health departments, hospital ICPs, hospital emergency rooms, and county emergency management agency (EMA) directors in Carroll County. * Performs assessment of capacity and procedures for timely reporting of infectious disease. * Monitors health data handling procedures for confidentiality and ensure that health information systems are secure. * Prepares and delivers presentations related to prevention and control of infectious and chronic diseases. * Analyzes chronic disease data sets and demographics to use in community health improvement planning. * Utilizes geographical information systems (GIS) to target priority or special populations. * Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

 Minimum Qualifications: An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  An example of an acceptable qualification is:  * High school diploma, GED, or equivalent  with * Master’s Degree in Public Health with focus on epidemiology and/or analysis and assessment.* Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or public health related field with additional coursework/training in epidemiology with at least two years performing epidemiology work required.* Preferred experience, training, and abilities in the following areas; research, infectious disease, chronic disease, statistics, quantitative analysis, epidemiological investigations, disease surveillance, and geographical information systems (GIS) * Preferred experience working with SAS, Epi Info, SPSS, and ODRS. * The successful candidate will need to be highly detail oriented, organized, and dependable with demonstrated proficiency in computer, communication, and multi-tasking skills.  * Valid Ohio Driver’s License, proof of insurance, and access to reliable transportation required. * Non-tobacco user.
