Environmental Health Unpaid Intern

Union County Health Department

Flexible schedule Monday – Friday, Part-Time or Full-Time. Routine travel within the County using personal vehicle required.

This unpaid internship consists of one primary projects; assisting Sanitarians in environmental health assessments, sampling techniques, procedures, and investigation processes. Contact homeowners, operators, and/or officials to schedule appointments. Assess sites to ensure compliance with environmental health regulations. Document findings in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. Prepare documents and maintain accurate records related to environmental health matters including correspondence, permits, activity reports, mileage, investigation findings, etc. Update records to ensure accuracy and completeness. Ensure departmental records are maintained in accordance with applicable privacy laws, policies, and procedures. Maintain a professional relationship with clients, contractors, and other governmental officials/staff. Collect water and effluent samples in accordance with standard methods. Perform operation permit assessments to ensure compliance with applicable state and local environmental health standards; and routine environmental health testing to determine compliance with sanitary abatement standards.   Conduct investigations of reported safety hazards. Apply the Union County Health Department’s standardized methodology in the assurance and/or enforcement of state and local laws and regulations for abatement of unsanitary conditions. Under the supervision of a Sanitarian, assist in rabies control investigations; investigations of food borne, West Nile, or other illnesses; health nuisance investigations and abatement; and rodent and other vector control and inspections.

Must be detail oriented, organized, possess strong oral and written communication skills, excellent time management skills, and strong customer service skills. A valid Ohio Driver’s License, valid auto liability insurance, the ability to maintain auto liability insurance, and the ability to maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance policy are essential. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, move, or push objects, packages, boxes, or files weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted and up to 50 pounds with assistance. A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of entry level college course work in the field of environmental health or public health preferred.
